Archangel Michael

Archangel Michael, after whom our church is named, is one of the most celebrated angels.

The feast day of Archangel Michael is celebrated on November the 8th.

Archangel Michael is often considered to be the field commander of God’s Army and he is sometimes referred to as “Archistrategos” which translates to “Supreme Commander of the Heavenly Hosts”.

Archangel Michael is often invoked for protection against enemies and civil war and for the defeat of adversaries on the field of battle.

His name, Michael means, “Who is like unto God?”

He is believed to be the Angel who appeared to Joshua at the battle of Jericho with a drawn sword in his hand.

“And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries?
And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the LORD am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my Lord unto his servant?”

And in Daniel 10:13 as appearing during battle with the Persians

But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia

Also in Daniel 12 it is revealed that St Michael will appear in the last days as protector of God’s chosen.

He also is recorded by name in the New Testament: in the book of Jude 1:9

Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee.

He is also mentioned int the Book of Revelation.

According to Church tradition the Archangel Michael has appeared many times since as protector of the Church militant.
